Come sapete, generalmente redigo i riassunti dei vari episodi di Law & Order dopo che sono andati in onda nella versione italiana. Ma poichè la serie si è conclusa pochi giorni fa sulla NBC mi sembra giusto pubblicare subito un riassuno / recensione dell’episodio, intitolato “Rubber Room”… molto più dettagliato del solito, come vedrete.

La rete via cavo TNT, che trasmette le repliche di Law & Order, ha seccamente smentito di essere interessata a produrre una 21esima stagione della serie.

Così riporta il Los Angeles Times.

TNT has brought the gavel down on “Law & Order.”

Ever since the recent cancellation of the 20-year-old landmark series by NBC, speculation has continued to swirl that a cable network might pick up the drama, which is tied with “Gunsmoke” as the longest-running series in TV history. Most of those rumors have centered on the possible interest of TNT, which last year picked up NBC’s canceled “Southland.”

Dick Wolf, the show’s creator, has said he is interested in keeping the show alive.

But Turner Broadcasting executives said in a statement Tuesday that “Law & Order” is not in their future.

“We are not in current talks, and we are not interested in a Season 21,” the statement said.

Though Turner may not be interested in resurrecting the drama, officials familiar with the situation said the company, which holds rerun rights to the series, must approve any deals involving the future of “Law & Order.”

A questo punto, le speranze di vedere una ventunesima stagione della serie si assottigliano sempre di più.

Law & Order ha terminato ieri sera il suo corso, con l’episodio “Rubber Room”, che non era stato previsto come conclusivo della serie perchè la cancellazione è stata comunicata ai produttori dopo la fine delle riprese. E’  possibile che Dick Wolf raggiunga un accordo con la rete TNT per realizzare una stagione 21, ma questo scenario appare poco verosimile. In alternativa, si parla dell’ipotesi di un film tv di 2 ore per dare un addio vero e proprio alla serie, ovvero di una menzione delle sorti di McCoy e compagni nel nuovo spinoff Law & Order: Los Angeles.

TV Guide Magazine ha pubblicato una intervista con il produttore esecutivo di Law & Order Renè Balcer, che parla della cancellazione della serie e del suo coinvolgimento nella realizzazione del nuovo spinoff Law & Oreder: Los Angeles.

Executive producer Rene Balcer joined Law & Order in 1990, second only to the franchise’s creator Dick Wolf in time served on the quintessential New York City show. TV Guide Magazine caught up with him in China to ask for his thoughts about the series after its unexpected cancellation.

When did you find out L&O was canceled?
Wednesday night last week. Then there was a reprieve, then Friday morning came the final swing of the axe. I have to admit, since I was in China at the time, most of the calls about the cancellation came to me in the middle of the night – so it’s all pretty much of a blur.

What was your first reaction?
As I said, I got the calls at about three or four in the morning. I kept hoping I’d wake up and find out it was all a bad dream. No such luck.

Were you surprised or not at the decision?
I’ve been in this business too long to be surprised by anything.

Was NBC’s decision, in your estimation, correct? Though the quality has been high, the ratings had faded.
This is like the perfect L&O episode – people can have six different opinions about NBC’s decision – and they’d all be right!

To your knowledge, could there be a cable option?
There is always a cable option.

It seems downright unfair after all 20 years of a such a ground-breaking show to end without a real series finale. Is there talk of either a TV movie or even several special episodes to wrap the storyline up in a way the show deserves?
I don’t know about unfair. I think in the best of all possible worlds, everyone involved would be happy to give the show a proper send-off.

Any ideas on how story-wise you would like the show to sign off?
You don’t seriously think I’d give that away, do you?

What is Law & Order’s legacy?
That’s for others to figure out. But it does prove that there is an appetite among the audience for smart shows that don’t pander or speak down to them. I also think that Law & Order is the one drama people will still be watching in repeats a hundred years from now,

What is your very favorite episode or moment from the show?
I have no one favorite episode, or rather I have many favorites. There’s one called “Thrill,” which is the opener of season eight and had a very emotional ending. It’s about the thrill killing of a pizza delivery kid by two other kids. They go off to the jail and the mother of the victim sends them off with this very moving speech. It was an episode that turned a lot of things on their heads. Issues of forgiveness and contrition and mixed them all up. It was a potent episode. Then there was “Memo from the Dark Side” where McCoy prosecutes [Dick] Cheney and the torture lawyers. And “Rubber Room”, the season 20 finale which I wrote and directed.

Your very favorite guest star?
This question can only get me in trouble. Let’s just say the dog Lupo adopted in “Submission” and leave it at that.

The mother ship may be gone but there will be Law & Order: Los Angeles. Will you work on that?
Cat’s already out of the bag on that one. I’m on LOLA to help Blake Masters and Dick get the show off the ground, and to help them realize their vision for the show.

Do you like LA as the site of the newest member of the franchise?
It’s a target-rich environment. LA was once known as the city on the edge of the future, but now that promise is somewhat tarnished. Cities in trouble are great settings for crime dramas – remember, L&O was launched in the middle of the crack wars in New York. But there’s a big difference between LA and NY – whereas NY is a true melting pot, LA is a mosaic of cultures living pretty much in their own enclaves. As Blake pointed out, you can get a series’ worth of shows by setting it in a different LA enclave every week.

What are New York actors going to do now? How important has the franchise been to the New York acting community?
As others have pointed out, the franchise has been hugely important to the acting community in NY, and to the rest of the city. But where as 20 year ago, L&O was pretty much the only game in town, there’s an abundance of TV production now in NY.

What do you want to do next?
Get some sleep. But I don’t think that’s in the cards.

Any final words in this eulogy to Law & Order?
Just that I’m deeply grateful to have been involved with a show that for twenty years has served as a weekly chronicle not just of the American justice system but of the world we live in, warts and all. It has, I hope, been an honest witness to our times.

La notizia è di poche ore fa: mentre fino ad ora i commentatori americani sembravano ottimisti riguardo al rinnovo della serie per la stagione 21, ora pare che la NBC abbia comunicato a Dick Wolf la sua intenzione di cancellare la serie, che da anni ormai fa ascolti non particolarmente soddisfacenti e che è molto costosa da produrre.

La notizia è stata annunciata  inizialmente dal sito Deadline Hollywood, e poi ripresa da tutti i principali siti che si occupano di tv, anche se non c’è ancora una conferma ufficiale.

Colpo di scena nel panorama televisivo americano: “Law and order”, la serie della Nbc in onda da 20 anni, sarebbe stata cancellata. La decisione del network, che non ha ancora confermato, non permetterebbe al telefilm di Dick Wolf di raggiungere le ventuno stagioni e di diventare la serie di prime time più longeva della storia della tv (dovrà “accontentarsi” dell’ex-aequo con “Gunsmoke”, trasmessa dal 1955 al 1975).

A decidere il non rinnovo della serie sarebbe stata Angela Bromstad, presidente della programmazione del network, che tempo fa s’era detta favorevola ad una 21esima stagione del telefilm (“Non voglio essere la responsabile del mancato record di Law and order”, aveva detto).

La media stagione dello show è stata finora di sette milioni di telespettatori, nonostante un’iniziale collocazione al venerdì sera, seguita dallo spostamento al lunedì. Gli ascolti hanno retto, ma pare che la decisione sia stata presa anche per via dei costi troppo alti della serie.

Se a questo aggiungiamo la scadenza del contratto con Tnt, che ha trasmesso le repliche degli episodi e che non ha intenzione di rinnovare l’accordo, la serie sarebbe costata troppo al network, che naviga in cattive acque. A questo punto, non sono al sicuro nemmeno “Chuck” ed “Heroes” (anche se, della seconda, gira già voce che non vedremo nuovi episodi).

“Law and order” non solo è entrata nella storia della tv americana, ma ha anche permesso la creazione di numerosi spin-off: “Unità speciale”, “Criminal Intent”, “Il verdetto” e “Los Angeles” che debutterà in autunno. Fuori dall’America, sono state invece realizzati adattamenti britannici, russi e francesi.

Se “Law and order” fosse davvero stato cancellato, toccherebbe agli spin-off cercare di battere il record, anche se sembra molto improbile: “Unità speciale” giungerà l’anno prossimo “solo” alla dodicesima stagione.

EDIT: TV Guide Magazine è per ora l’unica testata che dà la notizia come confermata.

EDIT: la situazione è complicata, a quanto pare. Secondo il  New York Times, i produttori e gli attori della serie sono stati informati nel pomeriggio di ieri della cancellazione di Law & Order, ma nel frattempo pare che i colloqui tra Dick Wolf e i responsabili della NBC stiano continuando. Però a questo punto le speranze mi sembrano scarse…

EDIT: è arrivata la conferma ufficiale della NBC, la serie madre dopo 20 stagioni è stata cancellata dal palinsesto della NBC. Rinnovata Special Victims Unit, dal prossimo anno arriverà anche lo spinoff Law & Order: Los Angeles. Il comunicato della NBC è su ew.com.

Come per Law and Order C.I. Parigi, anche per questo prodotto squisitamente inglese, episodi e trama del serial sono rigorosamente adeguati al contesto sociale e culturale del paese di produzione e alle sue peculiarità.

Scritto dal brillante sceneggiatore Chris Chiball, che ha adattato lo script originale al sistema giuridico e investigativo made in England, in Law and Order UK compaiono parrucche e toghe scure, indossate da avvocati e pubblici ministeri nelle loro avvincenti e suggestive performance in tribunale.

Molte le differenze con la serie madre, a partire dalla sigla e dalle modalità di ripresa, per finire con alcuni aspetti personali dei protagonisti, che in questa versione appaiono maggiormente delineati e approfonditi rispetto alle altre.

LO: UK pertanto segue la struttura di Law & Order,  ma è prodotta e ambientata in Gran Bretagna. E’ costituita per ora da soli 13 episodi, tutti ispirati ad altrettanti episodi di LO. Originariamente realizzate per essere mandate in onda in un unico ciclo, le puntate vennero poi distribuite in due stagioni di 7 e 6 episodi, andate in onda nel Regno Unito rispettivamente tra febbraio e aprile 2009 e gennaio e febbraio 2010.

FoxCrime dovrebbe trasmettere tutti gli episodi, partendo dall’1×01 Care (Cure) e dal 1×02 Unloved (Non amato).
